LUXEMBOURG

We have visited this little cute city few years ago but just for one day and couldn’t wait to come back because it was love at first sight and we knew we have to come back. So, here we are…

The city of Luxembourg is the capital of one of the smallest countries in Europe – Luxembourg. It’s often called “Gibraltar of the North” due to its valleys and plateaus. The best way how to see the city is on foot or you can use cheap public transport.

We started our exploring in the city center and our first steps led to the tourist office to get a map a find out what shall we see first. There is a fine architecture with plenty of shops and cafes but the best thing in Luxembourg is the views. Whether it is from the upper part or the lower part of the city the views are amazing.

In the city center don’t forget to visit Place de la Constitution with its fantastic view of the bridge Ponte Adolphe. The famous bridge was built between 1899 and 1903 and used to be the biggest stone arch bridge in the world at that time. It is located in Petrusse Valley and connects Gare with Centre. Not far from there is another famous landmark Notre Dame. The historic building is the seat of the archbishop of Luxembourg.

Right next to it are the famous Casemates – a 21km long network of underground tunnels and passages. It was a strategic place and shelter for the people of Luxembourg built in the 17th century.

We decided to descend deep down and visit the old town and Grund with a lovely atmosphere. We walked along the river and ended up in one of the churches with no one but us.  Just a short walk from there was the famous Portuguese part of Pfaffenthal.

Our next stop was a visit to the modern part of the city – Kirchberg with all European institutions. The most important are the European Parliament and the European Court of Justice but this part of the city is also a social and cultural place with many museums, Luxembourg Philharmonie, and exhibition centers.

The location of these institutions is easily accessible and is worth the visit. Apart from the offices and high buildings, you can also find here nice restaurants, bars, and small parks.

We can highly recommend a visit to this extraordinary city with so many cultures, mentalities, and languages in perfect harmony. With its stunning parks, historic buildings and landmarks, theatre and museums, UNESCO World Heritage sites, and architectural jewels, the capital city of Luxembourg is one of the most unique experiments that became a place not to be missed.

To avoid traffic jams and parking problems you should also consider traveling by train. For this, we would recommend Trainline, which is Europe’s biggest train and coach app.

Tip 1: If you become tired from walking you should consider using reasonable public transport.

Tip 2: If you would like to try their famous chocolate and very good coffee go to the city center and enjoy it in Cafe Namur.

Tip 3: The best place to have lunch in Kirchberg is the National Sport and Culture Centre d’Coque located just a few minutes walk from the European Parliament.

Total costs: 3 nights:  £210.00

  2. Hi Paul,
Thank you very much for your comment. I agree with you, Luxembourg is beautiful city and country. It was our second time here and we had amazing time again. This time we stayed longer and had enough time to see everything. We came during the Christmas time and that made Luxembourg even more magical. Thanks again and wish you all the best.
